Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Fits Movie Canon, Set in The Way of Water’s Timeline

Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, set for a future release, is confirmed to be canon and occurs during the events of The Way of Water.

While it’s not surprising that the game aligns with the Avatar universe’s canon, given past incorporations like 2009’s Avatar: The Game and Cirque du Soleil’s Toruk: The First Flight, a recent interview with producer Jon Landau offers insights into the approach to adapting the Avatar universe in other media. The focus is on creating new stories set in unexplored parts of this fictional world.

“Frontiers of Pandora is set in the western frontier of Pandora,” Landau explained to Polygon, “a region not previously explored in the films. It unfolds after the start of Avatar: The Way of Water, but before the movie’s one-year time jump.”

Landau further clarified that characters such as General Ardmore are mentioned in the game, but they’re located at the Bridgehead base, not the frontier. This approach mirrors that of Disney’s theme-park land, The World of Avatar, which is set in the Valley of Mo’ara.

Since its detailed reveal at E3 2021, Ubisoft has been relatively quiet about Frontiers of Pandora. The game is slated for release sometime between April 2023 and March 2024, indicating a significant wait for eager fans.
