Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Tech Showcase: The Secrets Behind Its Stunning Visuals
The reveal of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora at E3 2021 left audiences in awe with its stunning visuals, and a new tech showcase video sheds light on how Ubisoft achieved such an immersive, photorealistic world. This game, inspired by James Cameron’s 2009 film “Avatar,” is tailored for new-gen consoles and PC, utilizing Ubisoft’s enhanced Snowdrop engine. While Snowdrop has been used for games like The Division and The Division 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora required substantial upgrades to capture Pandora’s unique natural beauty.
Sebastian Lindoff, the technical art director, emphasized the significant enhancements made to the engine, stating that while previous projects pushed Snowdrop’s capabilities, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora represents the most considerable advancement yet. Kunal Luthra, a senior technical artist, explained that Snowdrop’s advanced microdata system can incorporate thousands of assets per frame, crucial for the detailed visuals seen in the game’s trailer.
Snowdrop’s ability to handle complex shaders enables a range of interactive effects, like real-time wind simulations and responsive plant life. A new volumetric cloud system was also integrated to enhance the skies in the game. The advanced hardware of the PS5 and Xbox Series X allows for features like ray-traced global illumination and reflections, pushing the game towards photorealism.
Additionally, the developers have introduced a system where NPCs react to environmental factors such as weather, player progression, and time of day, adding to the game’s immersion. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set for release on PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, Google Stadia, and Amazon’s upcoming Luna cloud service in 2022.
